Understanding On-Line Scoring

Understanding Tournament Scoring

In Hunting Unlimited on-line tournaments there are three different scoring options the creator of the tournament may choose from – Tourney Score, Longest Shot and Heaviest Animal.

Tourney Scoring

The TOURNEY Score uses the exact same score recorded in your GAME on the TOURNAMENTS screen, listed as YOUR BEST SCORE for a particular tournament.

You may have noticed that there is a difference between the TROPHY score for an animal and the TOURNEY score for the same animal.

Basically, within the species of animals you can hunt in HU, there is a wide range of trophy scores. i.e. an elk can easily go 400+, while a spectacular cougar would be in the mid 20s.

To level the playing field the designers have applied a system of modifiers to the trophy score to get a balanced tournament score, encouraging hunting a variety of animals. The exact modifiers have never been published and defy “reverse calculation” to an exact figure. But, experience will soon give you an idea of how each species is rated.

Key to the TOURNEY score is that all animal tags count toward the total. If you have 3 tags, all three tags add to the TOURNEY score.

Longest Shot

The Longest Shot score is based on just that, the longest kill distance on a SINGLE animal. Kill an animal at 451yds and 451 points will be your on-line tourney score. If there are multiple tags in the hunt, you can fill all available, but only the single longest shot counts.

Note that in your GAME on the TOURNAMENTS screen, the YOUR BEST SCORE will show the TOURNAMENT score for the hunt, NOT the LONGEST SHOT distance. This information is included in the encrypted score string uploaded to the tourney board’s database. The tourney board in turn reads the score string and picks out only the LONGEST SHOT distance, based on that tourneys requirements.

Also, see special considerations for rehunts, below.

Heaviest Animal

The Heaviest Animal score is based on just that, the weight of the heaviest SINGLE animal. Kill an animal that weights 752lbs and 752 points will be your on-line tourney score. If there are multiple tags in the hunt, you can fill all available, but only the single heaviest animal counts.

Note that in your GAME on the TOURNAMENTS screen, the YOUR BEST SCORE will show the TOURNAMENT score for the hunt, NOT the HEAVIEST ANIMAL weight. This information is included in the encrypted score string uploaded to the tourney board’s database. The tourney board in turn reads the score string and picks out only the HEAVIEST ANIMAL weight, based on that tourneys requirements.

Also, see special considerations for rehunts, below.

An Example of How Different Systems Would Work

If you were to hunt and get three animals:
Elk
175 tournament score
725 lbs weight
275 yds shot distance

Buffalo
135 tournament score
916 lbs weight
412 yds shot distance

WhiteTail Deer
125 tournament score
175 lbs weight
489 yds shot distance

If the tournament requirements were:

Tourney Score = 435 (175+135+125)

Heaviest Animal = 916 (heaviest of 725, 916, 175)

Longest Shot = 489 (longest of 275, 412, 489)

Special Considerations for Rehunts

From time to time a player may desire to rehunt the same tournament and improve their score. This is not an issue for TOURNEY SCORE, as the YOUR BEST SCORE is the same as the tournaments requirements. If you rehunt and get a better a tournament score, it will save the better score.

But, there can be a major issue when it comes to both LONGEST SHOT and HEAVY ANIMAL.

The problem is that the GAME only uses the YOUR BEST SCORE as the criteria and that score is based on TOURNAMENT SCORING. The GAME has no way of knowing the winning conditions of the on-line tournament, it only records all the information, which is passed to the tourney board database by the score string you upload.

So here is an example of the problem. As an example you are in a LONGEST SHOT tournament.

Your first hunt you get an Elk with the following stats:
175 tournament score
725 lbs weight
275 yds shot distance

YOUR BEST SCORE would be recorded as 175, but the on-line tournament score is 275 (the distance).

Then you rehunt the tournament and get a Buffalo with the following stats:
135 tournament score
916 lbs weight
412 yds shot distance

You think great, I’ve increased my on-line score from 275 to 412 (the better distance). The problem is that the GAME sees your second hunt as a 135, which is less than the first hunts 175 and discards the stats from the second hunt completely. Aarrgh!!

The same would have applied in the above example if the tourney requirements had been HEAVIEST ANIMAL, as well.

Here is the work-around solution. The score string is stored in a .pts file in your My Documents/Hunting Unlimited 2008/tournaments. You can simply make a subfolder called /saves and MOVE (not copy) the file from My Documents/Hunting Unlimited 2008/tournaments to My Documents/Hunting Unlimited 2008/tournaments/saves. ( HU2, HU3, and HU4 has the same set up for the tournaments files)
By doing this, the GAME does not know that you have hunted the tourney previously. If after rehunting, you haven’t improved your weight or distance score needed, you can still use your original .pts file. If you open the .pts file with Windows NotePad, it will be just like the file you see when you click on the “Score String” button in the HU game.

Edit: Be sure to check out under the TOC by reading the instructions for Playing On-Line Tournaments …it explains how to upload your score to the new SCS HU-T site.
