Hot Keys

Hot Keys listed below HU2008 photo shown. HU3 and HU4 layouts are basically the same.

Select Mode

For purpose of moving objects/animals around your map. When in doubt, click the “S” button and see if it helps in moving these items; when your holding the mouse button down and moving the cartridge shaped cursor by sliding it over the animal, green dot, or object to a different position. Sometimes near the edge of the background map you may run across it not staying put and sticking to your cartridge. Move it back a little away from the edge.

Delete Mode

Click this button, then the animal or object. This is for removing the animal/object from the editor map. A Delete Object/Animal window will pop up.It will ask if you are sure you want to delete this animal/object? If you do then click Yes. If you decided to keep the animal/object click No. You may also use the Mission Objects in the Toggle Workspace Window to find the animal or object you wish to delete. Example: player start position, animals, checkpoints, script points, trails, etc.

Animals

A list of 16 animals maybe selected for your animal placement. There is a description of each animal in the game on the Main Menu screen under “Game Animals”.

Note: It is advised not to over populate; between 25 and 30 animals on your mission if you are running an older (low end) video card. Some have run into a prism3d error problem or have the following happen: when you fire your weapon the game stops, and you return to your desk top. For newer (high end video cards) you should be able to populate up to 45 animals. It helps if the animals are spread out more across the map. You may also get a message “Cannot Place Here” if you try and place an animal in water, cliffs, or some mountains.

Note: Additional info for Animal Properties is at this link and Script Properties is at this link.

Ambient Animals

Small animals that maybe added to your user mission to give it a more realistic hunting prospective. Click the Ambient Animal “Hot Key”, than click a location on the large viewing map. Unfortunately, in HU4 and HU08 we lost our ground ambient animals but still have the flying ones. (HU3 only coyote, fox, rabbit, skunk, squirrel, wolf, lizard if your not running any of the game patches) eagle, butterflies (3 types), crow, vulture, woodpecker, sparrow, buzzard, ducks (2 types) and a fly. The animals may be placed anywhere except “cannot place here” which may include some mountains and or water. Ambient Animals do not warrant a Bag and Tag but some hunters have shot at and killed them for screenshots. You can click the T key to and take a screenshot of any animals ..even the ambient one’s you shoot down. Note: Ambient Animals for HU2008 and 4 include only the birds.
Additional Notes – Testing results for Ambient Animals
This test was done for the HU3 game with ambient animals, no patches were installed either. Every species was used to conduct the testing. It was found to not lock up the game or penalize the hunter for shooting any ambient animal. Roughly, 5 hunts were conducted adding additional ambient animals each time for a total of 60 ambient animals. I have not run into any game prism3d errors or problems with over populating the missions with ambient animals.

HU3 only – Upon installing patch 1.1 , tested, the ambient animals disappeared, then installing 1.2 the ambient animals still were invisible. The programmer are aware of the problem and will be creating a new patch as soon as their schedule allows it. The testing mission used is available for downloading here – ambient_animal_test.def . (Be sure to save to disk in your missions folder under your c:\my documents\hunting unlimited 3\missions)

Script Point

The circle position around animal placed on map and/ or ambient animal, there is a slide scale for range around the area you wish the animal to return to or to travel to. More about this under the Script title, which is to the right side of this screen.

Player position

You may select a player (hunter) start position which is a fixed location; the hunter will start in the same location each time the hunt is started. Click the Player Start Position under the “Hot Keys” then click on the large background map. A small box symbol with a stick man will appear on your viewing location. If you get a message stating “ You Cannot Place Here!” then move to another spot on the map. This occurs when you try and put your hunter in water, on some mountains, or cliffs. Just try another location. You may slide the player position over with your mouse button held down while doing so, the “S” mode key on. Remember not to place your hunter too close to your animals unless you want him to be pursued by dangerous animals. If you wish to let the Mission Object randomly select a player’s start position do not place a player (hunter) on your map. Your animals will be in a fixed position but the player will pick a random starting point from the black color start positions. Pretty much how the Free Hunts show all the green dots on the map.

Objects Container

Adds more realistic objects to your mission. The Object Container gives you the option to add more to your map and detailing it to suit your needs. There are additional box stands, 2 tents, dead animal remains, tires, empty 55 gallon barrel, camp fire and 2 scare crows. Note: HU4 and HU08 has added some additional containers such as 2 types of trucks, hay rake, ammo cans, 3 countries flag poles, and boxes, etc. Check to see what they added. There is also an altitude setting added to this feature for placing containers on top of something. Zero ‘0′ is ground level. Letting you place other containers on top or inside the bed of the trucks
You will observe in all the HU games just to name a few: pre-placed box stands, old church missions, camp sites, old outpost, train tracks, old military tanks and vehicles, farms, alien space craft (HU3), and many old abandoned building and ruins. Some of the silos and windmills may have ladders which you are able to climb up into (silo ladders work in HU3 only) like on box stands. Some of the ruins you can walk into and a few pole type buildings. Check them out see what you can find and enter while creating a mission or playing one.

Trails

You may add trail tracks for animals you place on the map. There will be an anchor trail that you can link to with other trails. They maybe bloody trails and tracks, if you have a wounded animal to hunt down. Tracks maybe located from the hunter to the animal. ***Note: Testing in progress to see if too many tracks linked to one anchor trail will disappear on your mission. Results posted later. *****Testing resulted in no missing tracks but do not stretch them out too long or they may not appear right. If you have trouble seeing the tracks turn your vegetation down ( move slide bar to your left) on your game options.

Checkpoints

Place checkpoint markers at the starting point of the hunter’s player position and/or throughout your hunt, they may be for warning aids and/or add to the description of what may lie ahead. The checkpoint screen has a scale bar to cover a small area or a larger one and will place a notation of what the hunter sees while hunting your mission, if the hunter comes across them. Bonus points for yes or no may be placed upon checkpoints to add points to the final score in the mission.
